Estimate Your Horse's Weight

You may need to estimate your horse's weight for calculating how much to feed your horse or how much medication or worming paste your horse should be given.

To estimate your horse's weight you will need a tape measure. Measure the horse's heart girth and their length. The two measurements must be in either centimetres or inches.

Horse showing where to measure the girth and length

To measure the heart girth, place the tape measure over the horse's back just behind the withers sloping the tape forward and under the horse to just behind the point of the elbow. Make sure the horse is breathing out and the tape measure should be firm but not tight around the horse.

The length of the horse is measured from the point of shoulder at the front of the horse along the side of the horse and slightly upwards to just below and to the side of the horse's tail. The tape measure should be straight and firm.

Using these two measurements enter them in the calculator below and press the button. The weight of the horse will be calculated for you.
